The Giving Closet 

The Giving Closet is where Durham County residents can receive free infant, toddler, children and maternity clothing, as well as accessories and baby equipment.

Am I eligible to shop at the Giving Closet? 

Shoppers must: 

  • be a Durham County resident 

  • be 4 months pregnant and/or have at least one child ages newborn to 5 years 

  • provide valid photo identification (driver's license, state ID, passport, school ID, embassy ID) each time you visit the Giving Closet

  • Verify residency once a year (provide utility bill, lease, Medicaid card, mail addressed to you, etc.) 

  • WIC, Medicaid or birth certificate for each child under 5 

  • Legal guardians/foster parents must provide documentation of children in care. 

When and where can I visit the Giving Closet? 

Hours of Operation: 

  • Friday mornings: 8:30 a.m.-11:10 a.m.

  • Friday afternoons: 1 p.m.-3:10 p.m .

  • Second Thursday of each month: 4 p.m.-6:10 p.m.  

  • The Giving Closet is closed for all Durham County government holidays

What should I expect when visiting the Giving Closet? 

  • Ten people shop at a time and are given 20 minutes to shop. 

  • You may have to wait. Welcome Baby serves many families, so there might be a wait for an hour or longer. Be sure to plan accordingly! 

  • You can come once a month, six times in our program year July-June 

  • We ask that you bring your own bags!

What does a typical visit to The Giving Closet look like? 

  • Shoppers can select...

    • a variety of clothing for each child under 5 years

    • accessories (socks, bibs, blankets, shoes, books, bottles, etc.) 

    • 1 large piece of equipment (if available) 

  • Diapers are available at the checkout. They are distributed based on the child's weight.

Childcare is provided for children 3 weeks to 5 years old while shopping.

Children over 5 years old can wait in the registration area or check-out location.
