Motheread & Fatheread

If you missed our group last time you’re in luck! It was such a huge success that we are offering it one last time before the summer break.

If you’re worried your children might watch too much TV, come and learn ways to get them excited about reading. A family that reads together turns off the TV and enjoys the warm weather together!

You will receive a wonderful tote bag to take home your new books and alphabet blocks. If you attend 7 out of 8 classes you can choose between an additional 2 new books or a certificate for additional items in the Welcome Baby Giving Closet.

Classes will be held on Fridays, 10–11:30 a.m. beginning on April 18th, for eight weeks.

Please pre-register by calling Kimberly at 560-7319.

Calling ALL Families who want to learn how to calm a crying baby!

In celebration of Welcome Baby's 20th year, we are co-sponsoring a presentation by nationally recognized author and pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp. Known for his popular books, The Happiest Baby on the Block and The Happiest Toddler on the Block, Karp will be here in Durham, Thursday, May 22nd, at 10 am for a community seminar for parents who want to learn more about his amazing techniques for calming your crying infant.

Dr. Karp has shared his ideas on the "4th Trimester" and the five S's with national audiences on Good Morning America and Dr. Phil and now Durham! His work is being adopted by professionals caring for newborns in hospitals everywhere.

The seminar cost is $5 and some scholarships are available.

Location: Durham Public Schools' Staff Development Center
2107 Hillandale Road, (near Carver Street) Durham, 27705

Please call Pat at 560-7341 for registration and scholarship information.

The event is co-sponsored by Duke Women's Services, the Duke Department of Social Work, and the Duke Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Program and Durham Connects-Durham's free newborn visit program-collaboration between the Durham County Health Department and Durham Family Initiative, and the Durham Partnership for Children, A Smart Start Initiative.

"Why does my child do that?"

That's often the question on a parent's mind! And Community Partnerships, Inc., will be at Welcome Baby on May 1st from 6-7:30 pm to answer that question and share other interesting points about child development. This workshop is free and there will be plenty of time to answer individual questions.

What is Community Partnerships?

Community Partnerships, Inc., creates opportunities for people of all ages with disabilities or social and economic disadvantages to pursue their dreams and engage fully in community life. Durham Inclusion Support Services at Community Partnerships supports providers and families to ensure that all children can be included in child care, after-school and recreation programs in their neighborhood.

Separation Anxiety Classes

Does your child have a hard time when you leave them in the care of somebody else? This class will help ease a child’s anxiety about separating from a parent in a variety of situations. This one hour class will give parents a method for dropping children off to our childcare room in a way that allows you to shop and your child to play peacefully. This class is required to use the childcare services during the Giving Closet. The class is offered the 2nd Monday of every month from 10 - 11 a.m.

Pre-registration is necessary. Call Kimberly at 560-7319 to register.

It can be hard for your child to be apart from you while you are in class. Here’s a suggestion to help your child feel more comfortable in the children’s room:

Prepare your child for class in advance. Before you leave for Welcome Baby, let her know that she will be playing with the children while you are in class. Be positive and upbeat about the fun she will have playing with other children, and reassure her that you will come right back for her when you’re done with class.

Reach Welcome Baby by phone at 560-7150.
