About Welcome Baby
Parenting Education and Support: Welcome Baby strives to answer the many child development and infant care questions parents have during their children's first years. We offer weekly classes on a variety of parenting topics. We also distribute developmental guides, offer telephone support to parents of newborns, have a discussion group for parents of newborns, maintain a lending library of books and videos, and our staff is available to discuss your individual parenting concerns.
Car Seat Safety Program: Free classes on the correct use and installation of infant/toddler and booster car seats are offered several times each month. Families who complete the class are eligible to purchase seats on a sliding fee scale.
Cribs for Kids: Welcome Baby is the local affiliate of the national Cribs for Kids© program. Through donations, we are able to distribute cribs to families referred through agencies providing in-home services and nurse home visit programs. Families receiving cribs also receive safe sleep educational information. The goal of the program is decreasing SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The program does not accept self-referrals. Prior to making a referral, professionals should contact the Cribs for Kids coordinator at 919-560-7319.
Developmental Guides: Welcome Baby's newsletter, Welcome Words, discusses the milestones and challenges of each age. Welcome Words covers the changes in children and the concerns of parents at each age. They include specific information about Durham County. The newsletters are available bi-monthly until your child is age 1 and then twice/year until age 5.
Spanish Services: All Welcome Baby services are available in Spanish. The phone numbers to speak with someone in Spanish about our program are 560-7338 and 560-7390.
The Giving Closet: Families can visit our free clothing closet six times during the program year (July 1 thru June 30th) to select children's clothing, maternity wear and infant equipment when available. Donations of clean infant and toddler clothing are accepted Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 9 and 4:30 or by appointment. Infant furniture and equipment are especially appreciated. Donations are tax-deductible.
Community Resources: Welcome Baby can serve as a link for families to other community resources. This listing describes some of the services available in Durham County. Families can call the Welcome Baby office for additional assistance and professionals can access the confidential referral system.
Volunteer Opportunities: Welcome Baby's programs are only possible through the work of many volunteers. Opportunities are flexible from visiting families at the hospital and offering support to parents of newborns to assisting at the clothing closet and providing childcare during Welcome Baby's parenting classes. Together our volunteers help care for the children of our community.
Lending Libraries: Welcome Baby offers a lending library of books and videos on topics pertaining to newborns, their care and development and many other child rearing and parenting topics. The library is located at the Welcome Baby office. The Durham County Library also has information on these topics. Visit the following link: http://www.durhamcountylibrary.org
